Week 7 Term 1 2022 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and the St Joseph’s Community,

    nl1.jpg

We are on our Lenten Journey, a season of grace, time of prayer and spiritual renewal. This third week of Lent we reflect on the parable of the Fig Tree and our call to repentance. Let us open our hearts and minds to God's forgiveness, healing and mercy.

Loving God, you give us forty days to journey into the inner mountains of our hearts and lives.  Let these sacred days be a time when we seek and find you with in each of us. Make this time of Lent a time to listen to your voice and be guided by your spirit.

    Saint Joseph Feast Day

This Saturday, 19 March is the Feast of Saint Joseph. St Joseph was a man of faith, action and strength. This week I encourage you to reflect on how, like St Joseph we can trust in God, love courageously and protect others unconditionally.

Please see the RE section of the Newsletter for information on how we will celebrate this special day as a school community on Friday.

    Unexplained Absences

Last week, an email was sent to families of students with unexplained absences. It is important that all student absences are lodged using the Compass Parent Portal. This can be done prior to your child being away, on the day of their absence or in a timely manner after they return to school. Maintaining and following up absences in a legal requirement so I appreciate your help in keeping your records up to date. If you have any questions regarding Compass please do not hesitate to contact me via phone or email.

    P&F Meeting tonight, 7pm

A reminder that all members of our school community are invited to join the P&F Meeting which is being held via Teams this evening at 7pm. These meetings are a great way for you to be involved in fundraising initiatives by sharing your ideas and skill sets. You can access the meeting using the below link. We hope to “see” you there.

    RATs Kits

Today we sent home the last of the Rats kits that were provided to us by the ACT Government. To date we have not been advised of any extension to this initiative. Thank you for your continued coopeRATion in monitoring your children for symptoms and keeping them home if unwell. A reminder that if your child tests positive to COVID, please email cameron.tarrant@cg.catholic.edu.au so that we can track the number of cases in the school and advise the community accordingly.

    ‘Nachos’ Gracias

Once again, the P&F Nacho Day Fundraiser was a huge success, raising a whopping $850! Thank you to Nichole H for coordinating the day and to her trusty band of helpers, Katie J, Tash WG, Nicol B, Julie-Anne W, Tiffany F and Danni from Camp Australia for pulling together another nacho feast for the students. Thank you also to all the families who ordered nachos, you not only filled your child’s stomach, you helped raise funds for the P&F which will be put back into the school community – nachos gracias!

If you are looking for other ways to contribute to the P&F Fundraising, don’t forget that you can drop your recyclable cans and bottles into the green bin in front of the school hall.

I hope you have an enjoyable end to the week.

    Yours in Christ,

    Amy Doszpot

    Assistant Principal

    Project Compassion

Last Week we made an excellent start by raising $131 for Project Compassion. The class who raises the most money over the 6 weeks will be rewarded with a pyjama day in Term 2. The leaderboard for week 1 is:

    1st 5 Orange $21.05

    2nd 3 Black $19.15

    3rd 4 Green $19.15

At school the Well-being Team we have been sharing stories of people who have received support through Project Compassion.

    RENEws.jpg

One story is from Anatercia from Mozambique who is a 12-year-old girl. Anatercia can now access clean drinking water, eat nutritious food and focus on her schooling. You can view her story at this link https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/anatercia-story/

A Lent for Our Common Home.

Another way of participating in Lent is through taking sustainable action. Each week during Lent we will be sharing some ideas on how you might take sustainable action at home with your family.

    Week 2- Waste

This week we think about how our busy lives produce so much plastic waste which causes pollution. You could:

    • Pack zero waste lunch boxes
    • Remember the reusable shopping bags
    • Donate a toy you have outgrown

We pray for the protection of our planet and give thanks to the environmentalists and recyclers for their commitment and effort to preserve the Earth for future generations

    Week 3- Taking action

This week inspires us with ways we can make a difference in our homes, communities and the world around us. You could:

    • Make an extra effort to serve others
    • Do a rubbish clean up
    • Write a letter to Mr Tarrant suggesting a change you would like to see at St Joseph’s
We ask you to stir our hearts into action.

    Changemakers

Changemakers is a group of students from Years 4-6 who are dedicated to action. After contemplating ways in which we can be the change we want to see in the world, this group is writing letters to businesses  requesting that disposable coffee cups become sustainably-minded. Other topics include a school recycling station for disposable masks, safer bike paths and a demand for sustainable packaging at local businesses.

    Incursions Galore

When excursions aren’t on the menu, we can bring the experts to us! Students in Year 2 enjoyed an informative incursion on our waterways and water conservation from Icon Water.
Year 3 Waste Warriors participated in a waste training session with the Recycling Discovery Hub. Congratulations to the Kahoots winners Eddie G and Harry F!
