Week 3 Term 1 2022 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and the St Joseph’s Community,

    Newsletter_prayer.jpg

    Meet the Teacher

This week, invitations were sent to all parents to attend a virtual meet the teacher session with your child/rens classroom teacher. Whilst an online meeting is not the ideal situation, we felt this was a valuable opportunity for you to put a face to the name of the person your child spends many, many hours with each week. If you were unable to “attend” the session, please contact the classroom teacher and they will forward a recording of the session to you.

    School Calendar

As we are now using Compass for all methods of communication, the school calendar is now also accessed through Compass. The calendar includes all relevant dates for the term and can be accessed by clicking on the Calendar icon on your Compass Home Page. Unfortunately, using the Compass App only allows you to view the calendar as a day view, which is far from ideal. Using a web browser rather than the app will allow you to see a monthly view of the calendar. We are in the process of linking this calendar to our webpage.

    Parent-Teacher Interviews

During Week 5 (28 Feb – 3 March), we will be holding Parent / Teacher Interviews. Keeping in line with our current Covid safe measures, these interviews will take place via Teams. This is a formal opportunity for teachers to discuss how your child has settled into the new school year and for you to share any important information about your child with teachers. If you have already had a formal meeting with your child’s teacher, there is no need to attend an interview. A Compass alert will be sent next week to advise when bookings are open.

    InitiaLit Parent Information Session

Next Tuesday 22 February at 4:30pm, we will be holding an online information session for parents of students in Foundation to Year 2 who would like to learn more about the synthetic phonics approach to Literacy used at St Joseph’s. A link to the session will be sent next via Compass next week. If you are unable to attend, you will be able to access a recording of the session.

    Tuesday 22/2/2022

Do you notice anything interesting about the above date? We have decided to rename next Tuesday, Two-Riffic Twosday! We thought we would have some fun and invite the students to come to school dressed as something that comes in 2s or starts with Tu/To/Tou. Get your creative thinking hats on!

    James Parkes Award

The James Parkes Award was established at St Joseph’s at the end of 2001. The award was set up by the parents of James Parkes as a thank you to the school community for the care and support James received from staff and students while at St Joseph’s. The award is open to students across all year levels and recognises exceptional school spirit, a positive attitude, initiative, determination, kindness and care for others. At the end of the year, teachers nominate and vote for the student they believe encompasses the above values. Throughout the year we will be talking to students about how they can display these values in the classroom, on the playground and in the wider community.

    School Fete

In 2021, our biggest fundraising opportunity, the biannual School Fete was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid. We are confident that we will be able to hold the Fete later this year and planning is already underway. Please see the below information from the P&F.

I hope you have an enjoyable end to the week.

    Sport News

    Swimming Carnival

Due to COVID restrictions in place for Term 1, the St Joseph’s Swimming Carnival has been cancelled for this year. All Term 1 events/Regional Swimming Carnivals can not take place, but at this stage the SSACT 12&U ACT Swimming Championships could still take place in Week 2 of Term 2 – this would allow a State Team to be selected for the SSA National Champs scheduled for August in QLD. With no School Carnivals nor Regional Swimming Carnivals as qualifying events, SSACT and Swimming ACT will implement a process to accept entries from schools across all events conducted within the ACT Champs Program. Entry times provided will have to be verifiable by Swimming ACT – they have a full database of all ACT swim club meets, this unfortunately means that entered students will need to be part of a club or established swim squad. There is an option to attend an outside of school club to get a verified time for those students not a part of a registered club. Please contact me for further information. Verifiable times will need to come from the most recent season (Oct 2021 the earliest date).

If you would like to nominate your child for the ACT Swimming championships please email koby.allan@cg.catholic.edu.au by no later than 26th February with your child’s name and DOB, Events and where the latest/personal performance times can be obtained e.g. Swimming ACT Meet Results, Swimming Australia National database etc. I will nominate students and once their times are verified will be in contact with those students who qualify.

The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to submit and pay for your order online. Your child’s order is sent directly to school and the books will be delivered to their classroom.

Let’s get recycling! We love when our school community contributes to our unusual recycling collection. This year you can bring in your old:

    1. Batteries- We will take them to Aldi for you!
    2. Oral Health Care- Old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss sticks are accepted and sent to Terracycle.
    3. Writing Tools- We can have these recycled through Officeworks’ recycling program
    4. Lids and bread clips- These are donated to Lids4Kids. We ask that you clean and dry your lids before your drop off. This might include taking the foam insert out as well.

While we have recycled coffee pods in the past, we are not accepting these at this time. In the meantime, you might look into compostable or reusable pods to eliminate aluminium waste.

The Special Recycling Centre is located outside the staff room near the school entrance.
